FAQ for the Golden Seamstress

Do we have to have a full team of 6?

No. You may have any number up to and including 6. If your 10-year-old niece irons, she’s on your team. If your 98-year-old grandfather spends the day hemming, he’s on your team. If you have a team of only one person, that’s fine too. If your model assists, your model is counted as a member of your team. The model must be on site for the Fashion Show and Judging.

Do I need to pre-register my team for the Golden Seamstress?

Yes. Pre-registration is mandatory for competing in the Golden Seamstress. All pre-registrations must be received by January 15, 2005. Registration requests received after that date are permitted entry only at the discretion of the event steward and the competition coordinator. We can be bribed.

What information do I need to supply to register my team?

Categories for judging will be based entirely upon the entrants. There are no pre-established categories until registration is complete. Should there be too few entrants in a category, at the discretion of the event coordinator they will be judged under the general geographical designation of either “European” (French, English, Italian, Spanish, German, Viking, Dutch) or “Eastern” (Russian, Polish, Turkish, Persian, Mongol, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Byzantine)

Do we supply our own equipment for the Golden Seamstress?

Yes. Bring a sewing machine, iron, scissors, beeswax, thread, pins, measuring tape, pre-washed fabric, tailor’s chalk, documentation, power strips, extension cords, mannequin, nippers, bobbins, steamer, etc., with you. We will supply ironing boards, cutting tables, sewing tables, electricity and some limited basic emergency notions (thread, needles, scissors, pins). Fabric must be flat and unmarked at start. Fabric can be pre-washed. The rest is up to you.

Do we need documentation for the Golden Seamstress?

Yes.

I’m a Laurel for sequined deely boppers, but I make really spiffy garb. May I compete in the Golden Seamstress?

No. You’re what we call a “ringer”, and garb laurels and ringers may not participate in the Golden Seamstress. You may, however, be a model for an existing team. You may also “sponsor” a team. If you desire, you may create a team made up exclusively of Laurels (Garb, cobbling, millinery), and while you may participate, you may NOT compete. You would just be doing it for fun.

Okay, no ringer laurels are permitted on a team. My laurel, who weaves, made this amazing trim for me last year. Can I use it on a garment in the Golden Seamstress?

Yes.

What about accessories?

Some accessories, like shoes, belts, gloves and metal fittings (such as buttons, pins, and buckles) can be pre- purchased or made in advance. They can also be made onsite by a member of your team, but again, a leatherworking or metalworking laurel (for example) is not permitted to compete in this manner. Pouches, hats, undergarments, and the like, must all be made onsite by members of your team

Can I bring my loom/spinning wheel/drop spindle/lucet/embroidery machine and weave/stitch/spin onsite?

Yes. The person doing so is considered a member of your team.

We have a team of 6, and one of our members wants to be in the Golden Quill too. Can we tag off halfway through the day and have someone replace them?

No. This would give you a team of 7 members total and is not permitted.

Can I do both the Golden Seamstress and the Golden Quill?

Yes. You’ll lose 6 hours of sewing time, and will have had no sleep the night before you start a scroll, but who are we to stand in the way of genius?

Can I bring my kid?

We offer no baby-sitting facilities at the Golden Seamstress. If there is any chance that your child may be considered a distraction to anyone competing in either the Golden Seamstress or the Golden Quill, we ask that you make alternate arrangements.

What happens when we win a category in the Golden Seamstress?

Next year (if there is a next year) you automatically compete at the next level (Novice moves up to Journeyman, Journeyman moves up to Master). Plus you get bragging rights.

Who are these people and why are they walking through the Golden Seamstress competition area?

They’re probably judges. If you speak in a clear firm voice and make no sudden moves, you should be safe. They may want to ask you questions about your work and your creative process. They will want to look at your documentation. You are not being officially judged at this time, but information gained at this point will be used when the Fashion Show/Judging begins (i.e. documentation, sewing methods, etc.)

How does the Fashion Show/Judging work?

It is up to you to decide if your model will begin fully dressed and end up in their undergarments, or if your model will begin in their undergarments and finish fully clothed. The judges will mark down your team’s work on a variety of subjects, and when the Fashion Show is over, will retire to a separate room to confer. At this time you are officially DONE and can finish loading up your car before Court begins and the winners are announced.

How many winners are there for the Golden Seamstress?

Can I compete in the Golden Seamstress and vote for the Populace Choice too? How does the Populace Choice work?

Yes, you may compete and vote. At Troll, everyone who signs in will receive two tokens, one for each Competition. At the presentation of each model during the Fashion Show/Judging, a Polaroid will be taken. After the Fashion Show, while the Judges confer, the photos of each model will be placed on a table with a bowl beside it. The team with the most tokens will receive the Populace Vote.

Can I bring a stereo/TV/VCR/boombox?

Not unless you have headphones. The music or movie that you find helpful to sew by may be completely distracting to another entrant. No publicly audible devices may be used.

Can I bring a walkman?

Yes. Don’t forget your batteries!

What about measurements and patterns?

Complete measurements can be done in advance. Journeyman Patterns must be drafted onsite. If you are a Novice you may use a professional pattern.

Does the outfit have to be completed to be judged?

No. It can be incomplete at the time of the Fashion Show and Judging.

HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR PARTICIPANTS IN THE GOLDEN SEAMSTRESS

If desired, a team made up exclusively of Garb/Millinery/Leather/Metalworking Laurels may be formed, in a NON-COMPETITIVE “Master” Category, just for the fun of it. All other rules apply.

FAQ for the Golden Quill

Do we supply our own materials for the Golden Quill?

Yes. Bring paints, brushes, pencils, sharpener, pens, ink, gold leaf, size, ruler, t-square, lettering guides, eraser, palette, water holders, etc. We will supply the paper. No pre-marked or outside paper is permitted. No reference within the room will be permitted. A limited supply of emergency materials (pencil, eraser, cups for water, paint) will be available, but they may not be of the highest quality.

Can we bring in reference material for the Golden Quill?

No. Once the Golden Quill begins, no reference material is permitted within the room (placing it in an opaque bag against the wall is acceptable). Documentation is encouraged for the purpose of judging, but may not be used during the competition.

Do I need to pre-register for the Golden Quill?

We’d really appreciate it if you did. And please let us know what skill level you will be competing at. It’ll make our lives that much easier.

I’m a Laurel for Calligraphy and/or Illumination. May I participate in the Golden Quill?

Yes. See below for more information.

How do the skill levels in the Golden Quill work?

What happens to the scroll entries after the Golden Quill?

Novice-level entrants may reclaim their entries, if they so chose, or may donate them to the Tyger Clerk of the Signet for use as blanks. Journeyman and Master-level entries are donated to the Tyger Clerk of the Signet for use as blanks. And thank you in advance for your generosity. Those pieces that are slightly incomplete will be finished by the artist chosen by the Signet to complete the blank in question. Those pieces that are clearly unfinished can be negotiated for return to the artist on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Signet (if they are in attendance) or the competition coordinator (if the Signet is not in attendance).

Can I bring a stereo/tv/VCR/boombox?

Not unless you have headphones. The music or movie that you find helpful to paint by may be completely distracting to another entrant. No publicly audible devices may be used.

Yes. You’ll lose 6 hours of sewing time, and will have had no sleep the night before you start a scroll, but who are we to stand in the way of genius?

I’m participating in the Golden Quill, can I still take part in the Populace Vote? How does the Populace Vote work?

Yes, you may compete and vote. At Troll, everyone who signs in will receive two tokens, one for each Competition. All entries in the Golden Quill will be given a number, and the artist’s name will be hidden. After the judges have finished examining the entries, they will confer in a separate room, and the Golden Quill room will be opened to the public. Each entry will be placed on a table with a bowl beside it. The team with the most tokens will receive the Populace Vote.

What happens if you win a category in the Golden Quill?
